Early Life: 1955 – 1982
Matthew Baumgardner was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1955. His father’s business caused the family to move eight times by the time he was in the eighth grade, making it difficult for him to feel rooted. In 1965, his family moved to Bernardsville, New Jersey, where he found solace in the surrounding woods and land. Throughout his career, he incorporated themes involving the four elements of nature: earth, air, fire, and water. He received an MFA from UNC Chapel Hill in 1982.
